"ussen 24 Junie 1899 en 16 Februarie 1900 vestig verskeie boere hulle in die Kub omgewing. Willem en Roelof (Loffie) v/d Merwe, Fritz Brand en Jan Basson vestig op Kub Suid terwyl Jan, Jacobus en Stoffel Coetzee en Piet Brand Voigtskub van Wecke en Voigts huur. Die Distriksbeampte te Gibeon skryf onder meer " Hierdie mense dring aan op 'n verlenging van die huurkontrak, lê groot tuine aan waar hulle groot bakkiespompe opstel en geld as arbeidsame boere wie se kleinveestand tans 7 000 is". (Vrye vertaling). Op 15 Augustus 1900 verkoop Wecke en Voitgts die buurplaas Gurus, 12 000 hektare, aan RW v/d Merwe (4 000 ha), Jan Basson (4 000 ha) en 'Herri' (Henry) William Gird (4 000 ha), terwyl Frans van Sittert en Jasper en Willem Dreyer die plaas Narib op 30 Augustus 1900 van Hendrik Witbooi huur. Jare later, maar voor die Nama opstand, koop Frans van Sittert op 5 Augustus 1904 Narib (20 000 ha) teen 20 000 Mark van Hendrik Witbooi wat toe op Rietmond woon. Ander families in die Kub geweste was o/a Maritz, Mostert, van Lill, Booysen, Lambrecht, Kooij, Nieuwoudt, Piek, Jurgens, Rousseau en Croeser.


Die Slag van Kub



Kort na sonop op 22 November 1904 val 'n groot getal Namas die boerelaer te Kub aan. Die Namas was onder aanvoering van Hendrik Witbooi persoonlik, bygestaan deur o/a Samuel Isaak en Simon Kooper. Oor die Namagetalle verskil geskiedskrywers. Volgens Connie Zondagh was daar sowat 1 000 voetgangers en 1 500 berede vegters rondom Kub, terwyl Gustav Preller die totaal as 1 500 en IM Skillian dit as 1 600 aangee. So ook verskil die bronne oor die getal weerbare manne aan boerekant. Gustav Preller gee dit aan as 72, wat 'n aantal Duitse soldate insluit. 'n Ander bron verwys na 'n totaal van 72, bestaande uit 18 weerbare boere, 10 skoolseuns en 'n aantal Duitse soldate. IM Skillian stel dit op 31 aan boerekant, waaronder skoolseuns so jonk as die 11-jarige Piet Brand. Later, nadat Von Brandt met sy Duitse soldate aangesluit het, was die getal volgens Skillian 71.


Spoedig na die aanval op 22 November 1904 begin het, het die Namas die dolorietkoppie waarop die heliograaf was, beset. Vanaf hierdie posisie het hulle die laer, wat geleë was ongeveer waar die latere skool opgerig sou word, onder die koeëls gesteek. Die manhaftige optrede van sewe boere deur teen die koppie uit te kruip en die Nama-optog daar te stuit, hetgrootliks tot die tydelike redding van die Afrikaner-families en die Duitse soldate te Kub bygedra. IM Skillian sê onder meer "Here they fought until noon, and today it is easy to see that these brave men had to virtually crawl all the way to the top."


Ongelukkig is daar ook onduidelikheid oor die name van hierdie sewe manne wat reeds in 1953 met 'n monumentjie vereer is. Uit die bestudering van alle geskrewe bronne tot ons beskikking, is dit duidelik dat oor die teenwoordigheid van Adriaan Croeser, Harry Gird, Jan Jurgens, Albertus Kooij en Jan Lambrechts daar geen twyfel is nie. Benewens hierdie vyf, blyk dit dattwee van óf Eduard Mostert, óf Piet Brand óf Willem Dreyer die res van die groepie uitgemaak het. Volgens Fritz Brand jnr self, in sy weergawe aan PG Visser, het hy en sy swaer, Jan Coetzee, later by die 'geveglyn' aangesluit, en nog later ook 'n Duitse soldaat wat die totale getal manne op die koppie tot tien verhoog het."


Op 'n stadium het die boerevegters op die Namaperde losgebrand en ofskoon van die Namas teruggeval het, sou die geveg in alle waarskynlikheid vir die handjievol boere enDuitsers 'n verlore stryd gewees het. Redding het gekom in die vorm van die 4de Kompanie van Oberst Deimling en sy 230 soldate en 'n veldkanon en spoedig het die Namas op die vlug geslaan. Aan boerekant het niemand gesneuwel nie, maar 7 Duitse soldate (sommige bronne sê 8 en andere 9), het die hoogste tol betaal, terwyl 23 Duitsers gewond was.
