    Hij bouwde, met zijn broer Bernardus Berends Drenth, eerst schepen (werf bij de grens met Nieuwe Pekela), maar toen het steeds slechter ging in de scheepsbouw, richtten zij de aardappelmeelfabriek "De Eersteling" op, die echter vooral bekend stond als Gebroerders Drenth en Co. In 1901 was hij mede-oprichter van de strokartonfabriek "De Kroon" in Oude Pekela.
