Notes about James L Bailey

[doddimp.FTW] [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 14, Ed. 1, Tree #0434, Date of Import: Apr 15, 2001] James L Bailey and Martha Vaughn James Bailey was born about 1824 in North Carolina. His parents are not known at the present time. Martha Vaughn was born about 1830, probably in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Her parents are belived to have been Spencer and Leanah Vaughn. Both were probably born about 1800; he in Virginia and she in North Carolina. James Bailey and Martha Vaughn were married on February 17, 1845, in McDowell County, North Carolina. McDowell County had been formed from portions of Rutherford and Burke Counties in 1842. (LDS Church records show Martha's husband to be named Joseph L Bailey and not James L Bailey, however census records clearly show James). They moved from North Carolina to Union County, Georgia, in late 1847. Their oldest child, Marion (or Wilbur) Bailey, was born in North Carolina about 1847. Their next three children were born in Georgia: John Riley Bailey, born January 30, 1848; Harriet Melissa Bailey, born March 6, 1850; and Thomas Aaron Bailey, born about 1853. The family then moved from Georgia to Tennessee about 1854, where their fifth child, William Bailey, was born in 1855. The last four of the nine children were born after a move to Missouri in the late 1850's: Matthew Bailey, about 1860; James Bailey, about 1865; and the twins Isaac and Albert Bailey; in 1869. By the date of the 1870 census in August, 1870, the family was in Benton County, Arkansas. A daughter, Harriet, was married in Benton County on June 5, 1871, to John Henry Buckner. Benton County land records show James Bailey's acquisition of 160 acres of land in December of 1882. No direct record of James and Martha Bailey after 1882 has been located although a son, Isaac, was married in Randolph County, Arkansas, on March 20, 1891, at about the age of 22. It is not known if his parents had moved from Benton County to Randolph County. They could not be located on the 1900 Arkansas census.
