Notes about Cornelis Pieterse Botbijl

In 1769 overleed Teunis Boekhouwer, de schoolmeester van Fijnaart12. Sinds november 1749
was hij twintig jaar onderwijzer geweest van de kinderen in Fijnaart en omgeving. Behalve
dat hij schoolmeester was, werd Boekhouwer voor allerhande baantje ingezet. Hij had er
tenslotte voor geleerd. Zowel de Hervormde kerkenraad als het Fijnaartse dorpsbestuur
maakten van zijn diensten gebruik13. Nu Boekhouwer is overleden, moet er naar een
opvolger worden uitgekeken. Juist vanwege die meerdere functies van de schoolmeester,
kwamen de kerkenraad en het dorpsbestuur daarvoor gezamenlijk bijeen en wel op 22
augustus 1769 in de consistorie van de kerk.
Van deze bijeenkomst zijn notulen opgemaakt en bewaard gebleven, waardoor we een en
ander over de schoolmeesters uit die tijd te weten komen. Het Fijnaartse gemeentebestuur
bestond daarbij uit Baljuw Jan van Doorn en de schepenen Cornelis Botbijl, Roeland Vissers,
Jan de Been, Willem Maris Johannes Lips, Meeuwis Leendert van Dis en Nicolaas Hartveld.
Secretaris was H.M. van Rijssen. Namens de kerkenraad waren aanwezig Hendrik Cornelis Knook, Arie Punt, Pieter van der Gijp, Jan de Lint, Leendert M. van Dis en dominee J. van den Boogaart.14 De burgerlijke bestuurders hadden Gijsbert van Herpen op het oog. Hij was ondermeester van het weeshuis in Dordrecht. De kerkelijke bestuurders hebben ingestemd met de komst van Gijsbert van Herpen, mede omdat hij als koster en voorzanger in de kerk zou gaan functioneren. Eenstemmig kon worden besloten tot de benoeming van G. van Herpen als schoolmeester-koster-voorzanger. De andere functies die hij nog op zich zou nemen werden niet vermeld, deze drie waren voor kerkenraad en magistraat van groot belang. Onder het verslag schrijft dominee Van den Boogaart over de goede verhouding waarin een en ander tot stand gekomen was dat beide partijen ‘in alle vriendelijkheijd scheijden’. Dat was wel eens anders geweest!
