Ds. A. Littooij (1867-1908).
De kerkenraad moest dus weer omzien naar een opvolger. Deze werd gevonden in ds. Arie Littooij (1834-1909) van Sint Annaparochie in Friesland. Hij was van 1867 tot zijn emeritaat in 1908 predikant te Middelburg, had veel invloed en werd ook landelijk bekend. Hij leefde dan ook in een roerige periode in de Nederlandse kerkgeschiedenis. Allereerst kreeg hij te maken met de Doleantie en verder maakte hij de troebelen betreffende een eventuele samensmelting van de twee gereformeerde theologische opleidingen mee: de Theologische School te Kampen en de Vrije Universiteit te Amsterdam (dat laatste onderwerp valt echter voornamelijk buiten het bestek van dit artikel).
Binnen een half jaar kreeg hij het zwaar te verduren door één van de gemeenteleden die een zware beschuldiging aangaande de leer tegen hem inbracht, omdat dominee in strijd met de ‘Vijf Artikelen tegen de Remonstranten’ gesproken zou hebben. Hij zou de ‘algemene verzoening’ geleerd hebben. Hoewel ds. Littooij trachtte aan te tonen dat de beschuldiging niet op waarheid berustte gaf Marinus van der Werf, want hij was het, niet toe. De kerkenraad concludeerde dat het om een woordenstrijd ging, maar omdat Van der Werf tegen anderen kwaadgesproken zou hebben van de predikant kreeg hij twee weken tijd om zijn zonden te overdenken. Na nogmaals vergaderd te hebben moest de kerkenraad besluiten dat Van der Werf de predikant woorden in de mond gelegd had die hij niet gezegd had en stelde hem onder censuur. De provinciale vergadering was het er mee eens op grond van de Catechismusverklaring van de uitermate rechtzinnige achttiende eeuwse schrijver Alexander Comrie (1706-1774). Uiteindelijk bekende Van der Werf schuld; de censuur werd opgeheven en hij verhuisde naar Zierikzee.

Het beroep dat in 1869 vanuit Schiedam op Littooij uitgebracht werd nam hij tot zeer grote vreugde van de kerkenraad, die hoopte dat hij nog lange jaren in Middelburg zou blijven, niet aan.
