De menseneter van de Zambesi
[27 april 2016] Nieuw in de tentoonstelling 'Dode dieren met een verhaal' is de schedel van een Nijlkrokodil (Crocodylus niloticus). Het reptiel werd omstreeks 1910 geschoten wegens onbehoorlijkheden jegens vele inlanders langs de Zambesi in Mozambique. De schutter, Rudolph Willem Vroon (1865-1935), schonk behalve de schedel ook de maaginhoud aan het toenmalige Museum voor Land- en Volkenkunde: 42 polsbanden, twee halssnoeren en een ring.
De afmetingen van de polsbanden (diameter 41 - 65 millimeter) wijzen er op dat de krokodil het ook op kleine kinderen gemunt had.
De schedel met sieraden waren rond 1915 te bezichtigen in de Afrikazaal van het museum maar het ensemble verdween na verloop van tijd in het depot. In het kader van de tentoonstelling AFRIKA 010 in het Wereldmuseum (29 april 2016 - 8 januari 2017) heeft De menseneter van de Zambesiâ nu een tijdelijke ereplaats tussen de dode dieren met een verhaal uit de collectie van Het Natuurhistorisch.
