Van oorsprong een gereformeerde familie uit Den Burg. De stamvader Pieter Cornelisz de Jong, zoon van Cornelis Pietersz de Jong en Martje Jans Kolder, was bakker. Het beroep is hier de geslachtsnaam geworden.

Hij was in 1728 president-schepen, een functie die later ook werd bekleed door zijn kleinzoon Bouwe Cornelisz Bakker, die op betrekkelijk lat leeftijd huefe met Grietje Cornelis Lap uit De Hoorn.
