He was born in Friesland, the northern province of the Netherlands, in the small village Huizum, now a part of the province capital Leeuwarden. as Hendrik Dijkstra. Son of Jarig Dijkstra and Augustina Geertruida Visser.
Hendrik (and two years later his brother Jarig) arrived on april 6, 1912 on Ellis Island together with his wife Aaltje van der Wal. In the USA Hendrik and Aaltje Dijkstra changed their names in Henry and Alice Dykstra. Henry is a (in the Netherlandsand in the USA) painter and Alice has no profession.
Henry and Alice have seven children a daughter Sarah and six sons born in Little Rock, Lyon, Minneapolis and they live, according to the Census 1930 and 1940 then in Sibley, Holman Township, Osceola, IOWA.
