Born in Illinois, Alonzo Clark was 22, and living in Delhi, Delaware Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. I of the 2nd Iowa Cavalry on Aug. 4, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Aug. 31, 1861.
Clark was discharged from the 2nd Iowa Cavalry on Oct. 22, 1861, when he was promoted as the 2nd Lieutenant of Co. B, 4th Iowa Cavalry. He was later promoted to 1st Lieutenant on Dec. 7, 1863, and then to Captain of Co. B on Sept. 27, 1864.
During his term of service with Company B, he was detached as Quartermaster on the staff of both the brigade and division commanders during 1863-1865. He was mustered out of the service along with Company B on Aug. 8, 1865, in Atlanta.
Clark died Dec. 7, 1867, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His wife applied for her widow's pension on Sept. 27, 1916. Her application is #1,084,476, and her certificate #922,057. She remarried Volney M. Babcock, who was also a Civil War veteran who had served in Batteries F&H of the New York Light Artillery, and the 7th Independent Battery of the New York Light Artillery. He had died Sept. 29, 1897, in Larimore, South Dakota.
