Notes for LABURTIS DARWIN EASTMAN: Contributed by Thelma Floyd Eastman.
"Not too much information has been found on the birth, family or early life of Leburtis Darwin Eastman. He is thought to have been one of the younger members of a large family and is known to have been born in 1824. Some records appear to show that he was born in Vermont, but no definite proof of this has been found. He was said to have left home at an early age and became a whale fisherman on a boat at sea for a time, even to the extent, in later years, of walking as with the rock of a boat.
Leburtis left home when he was 23 years of age and followed the sea until he was 21. Later, he worked in the cotton and woolen mills of Lowell, Massachusetts.
Leburtis married Harriet CORBIN on August 23, 1846. They move to Warren, Massachusetts and were there about 9 years, then to Lafayette, Indiana, where he made boots and shoes.
In 1862, they move to Clinton County Iowa and farmed for seven years. They moved to Hardin County Iowa in 1869 and bought 160 acres in Tipton Township.
In about 1875 or 1876 Leburtis Darwin and his wife Harriet along other members of their family migrated westward by covered wagon to Cowley County, Kansas from Hardin County, Iowa. They first staked a claim in the Walnut Valley area south of Winfield. Later they moved to a place on Posey Creek, where they lived in a small roughly built house which was part dug out. This farm, known as the Lance farm in Posey Creek, was purchased by Leburtis on January 10, 1878 for $1300. The farm was 158 acres in Pleasant Valley Township, Cowley County. In 1885, they moved to a home at 1802 Cherry Street in Winfield. There Leburtis died August 11, 1908 of general debility. Harriet died April 2 or 3, 1921 of mitral insufficiency. They were both members of the Methodist Church. They are buried in Union Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas."
