Ida Louis McLean of Middle Haddam, June 17, 1897."

The following poem by Dr. G. N. Lawson of Middle Haddam, a former resident of Union, was read at the dedication of the soldiers' monument at Union on Memorial Day, 1902:

IN COMING YEARS.
What message will yon block of granite bear
To those who in the days to come shall pas this way?
What will it tell the man bowed down with care?
What lesson teach the child who sees it in his play?

In each one, as he looks, some different thoughts will
rise,
As each in life has played some different role.
we see the colors suited to our natural eyes;
We feel those yearnings germane to our soul.

Perchance some father, seeing this, may pray:
"God grant my boy may be of those who dare
To follow where the flag of right may lead the way.
That he attain a noble, earnest manhood is my
prayer."

The mother, taught by this, will partly know
The tearful eagerness, the trembling pride
Of those who kissed their sons adieu so long ago.
and tried with smiles their aching hearts to hide.

the maid or matron to whose life has come
The love of some strong, noble, upright man,
Will know the choking throats that made those others dumb,
Of hearts that ached at parting as only woman's
can.

Some passing youth may feel his pulses swell,
His muscles tighten and his teeth shut fast;
The call to do, to dare, to be, may tell
Of earnest manhood come, of childhoods play-life
passed.

This mute memorial of a dark, sad time
Gives us some hint of that glad future day,
When wars shall cease in every land and clime,
When guns shall rust and swords be laid away.
