    De traditie van wetshandhaving op de Rademarkt gaat eeuwen terug en gaf de aanleiding voor de naam van het plein. Dat lezen we in de Groningsche Volksalmanak uit 1893, destijds geschreven door stadshistoricus Johan Adriaan Feith.

    Wat was het geval? Niet zo ver van deze plek was ooit de Beulsgang: de plek waar de beul van Groningen woonde. Volgens Feith was de Rademarkt in die tijd een strafplaats, waar onder andere een groot rad was opgesteld. Dit rad (de ‘raa’ of ‘rade’) was het instrument waarmee de beul op de meest onsubtiele manier de wetsovertreders van Groningen hun straf oplegde.

    In vragende vorm geeft Feith zijn visie op de herkomst van de straatnaam. “Kan de naam dan wellicht ook in verband staan met ‘raa’ of ‘rade’, het rad het werktuig waarop (…) heimelijke brandstichters, kerkenbrekers, (….) verraders ende hoer boden volgens de bepalingen van het Groninger Stadboek van 1425 door de beul werden geradbraakt?”

De gang werd vroeger ook wel de Beulsgang genoemd, omdat de stadsbeul Christopher Scharprichter er woonde. De Veulsgang is afgebroken om plaats te maken voor het politiebureau aan de Rademarkt.
