      De Utrechtse Wijk C is van oudsher erg Oranjegezind. 150 jaar geleden was het een arme volksbuurt en de dichtstbevolkte wijk van Utrecht. Toch deden de bewoners van de wijk in 1885 al fervent mee aan de viering van de eerste Prinsessedag, ter ere van de vijfde verjaardag van prinses Wilhelmina. Het was de voorloper van de Koninginnedag en Koningsdag, een feestdag die jaren later nog met evenveel enthousiasme in heel Nederland gevierd wordt.
      Wijk C had zich eerder al op de kaart gezet als koningsgezinde wijk. In de letterlijke zin.

      De wetgeving van de gemeente was destijds niet zo streng op de naamgeving van de straten in Utrecht. Had de buurt of een bouwondernemer een leuk idee, dan kon het maar zo zijn dat dat gewoon door de gemeente werd overgenomen. Het was in november 1863 dat de bewoners uit Wijk C naar de gemeente stapten met ideeën voor een aantal nieuwe straatnamen, waaronder de Willemstraat.

      Ten tijde van de wijziging van de straatnaam zat koning Willem III op de troon in de Nederlanden. Vlak voordat hij koning werd, in november 1848, werd de nieuwe Grondwet ingevoerd in Nederland. Niet erg gunstig voor Willem III. Hij kreeg door de Grondwetsherziening een stuk minder macht. Hij ging dan ook niet zomaar akkoord met zijn nieuwe rol als koning. Maar afstand doen van de troon, dat kon niet, lieten de ministers hem weten. Toen aanvaardde Willem III toch maar zijn plaats op de troon.

      In het begin kreeg Willem III aardig wat inspraak in de politiek, bijvoorbeeld bij het benoemen van ministers. Met de wat conservatievere kabinetten wilde het nog wel boteren, maar in het jaar 1862 werd Thorbecke opnieuw kabinetsleider. De grondlegger van de parlementaire democratie moet voor de koning een soort rivaal zijn geweest. En zo ook voor de Oranjegezinde bewoners van de Utrechtse Wijk C.

      In 1863 werd de toenmalige Catharijnestraat omgedoopt tot de Willemstraat. De straten genaamd ’t Zand en Zandstraat kregen gelijktijdig de namen Koningstraat en Oranjestraat.
