Rachel werd op 23-3-1943 van uit Westerbork naar Sobibor gedeporteerd waar ze 3 dagen later werd vermoord.

Indrukwekkende herdenking van de ontruiming van het Joodse Weeshuis

Dit jaar was het alweer de zesde keer dat de wijkvereniging de deportatie en de moord op de bewoners van het voormalige Joodse Weeshuis aan de Roodenburgerstraat 1a op 17 maart 1943 herdacht, nu 69 jaar geleden.

Samen met tientallen scholieren van het Erasmus College uit Zoetermeer en van het Bonaventura College uit onze wijk werd aandacht geschonken aan de ontruiming. Bij het koffermonument op de stoep werd een krans geplaatst en hebben leerlingen hun traditionele steentjes achtergelaten.

Mevrouw M. Frank vertelde als vertegenwoordigster van de Nederlands Israëlische Gemeenschap (NIG) het hartverscheurende verhaal hoe zij en haar broertje door Nederlanders uit de trein naar de vernietigingskampen zijn gered, terwijl haar ouders en grootouders doorgingen. Samen met haar broer is ze later terug geweest naar Sobibor om daar bij de asberg niet alleen haar eigen familie te eren, maar ook de 171 Joodse Leidenaren die in de kampen zijn omgekomen.

Begeleid door de muziek van de Kaddish-sonate van Ravel werden door de leerlingen de namen van de afgevoerde bewoners van het weeshuis voorgelezen, tezamen met de leeftijd en de plaats waar ze werden vermoord. Voor de meest bewoners was dat Sobibor.

In de voormalige gebedsruimte in het gebouw was een bescheiden tentoonstelling over de post die de mensen na 17 maart uit kamp Westerbork stuurden naar de familie Stoffels, de buren die zoveel voor de mensen uit het weeshuis hebben gedaan.

Er is een documentaire over het weeshuis beschikbaar genaamd “Bagage” die Niels Goudriaan in 2010 heeft gemaakt. U kunt deze dvd bestellen via (XXXXX@XXXX.XXX) De prijs is € 20,--.
