Raadslid vanaf 1935 van de gemeente Zaandam en wethouder vanaf 1956 tot 1974.
Dirk Metselaar werd op twaalfjarige leeftijd lid van de Arbeiders Jeugd Centrale. Zes jaar later werd hij lid van de SDAP, en weer zes jaar later werd hij penningmeester van de afdeling Zaandam van deze partij. In september 1935 kwam hij, 26 jaar oud, in de gemeenteraad van Zaandam. Hij bleef daarin zitting houden tot de ontbinding van de raad door de Duitsers in februari 1941.
Na de oorlog kwam hij onmiddellijk terug in de noodgemeenteraad. In november 1956 werd hij wethouder voor de PvdA. Hij verkocht toen zijn groentehandel aan de Zuiddijk. Metselaar zou wethouder van Zaandam blijven tot deze gemeente opging in Zaanstad. Onder zijn verantwoordelijkheid hadden de grote uitbreidingen van Zaandam plaats. De woonwijken De Vijfhoek, Poelenburg, Peldersveld en Hoornseveld kwamen tot stand en de doorbraak van het stadscentrum via de Beatrixbrug en de Peperstraat werd gerealiseerd.
Voorts was Metselaar één van de stuwende krachten achter de bouw van de Zaanse Schans en was hij voorzitter van de commissie, die het Erasmushuis liet bouwen (zie: Bejaardenzorg
Bejaardenzorg
Bejaardenzorg Welzijnszorg specifiek toegespitst op bejaarden; verschoven van particulieren en/of kerkelijke instanties naar de overheid. Bejaardenzorg als aparte welzijnszorg ontstond voor het eerst duidelijk na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In de 19e eeuw en daarvoor maakte de bejaardenzorg deel uit van de algemene armenzorg (zie: ...
). Bij zijn afscheid werd hij benoemd tot ereburger van Zaandam. Naar zijn naam is in industriegebied Achtersluispolder de Dirk Metselaarhaven gegraven.
