NOTE: Widukind, Saksisch grootgrondbezitter, leidde ca. 778 een opstand vanSaksen tegen Karel de Grote. Na aanvankelijke successen, die hem groteaanhang bezorgden, was Widukind gedwongen naar Denemarken te vluchten. Nazijn terugkeer slaagde Widukind erin een Frankische strijdmacht van Karelde Grote in het Suntelgebergte bij de Weser te verslaan. Karel onderwierpdaarop Saksen in een aantal campagnes. In 785 bood Widukind ten slottezijn onderwerping aan. Hij werd gedoopt in het kasteel van Attigny aan deAisne; Karel de Grote zelf was zijn peter.
