Notes about Rollo (Robert) der Noormannen

NOTE: Rollo of Robert (I), oorspronkelijk: Hrôlfr (gest. 931), sedert 911 hertog van Normandië, Noormannenleider, werd uit Noorwegen verbannen en ondernam daarna grote strooptochten met zijn volgelingen. Hij verscheen o.a. op Walcheren en in Friesland en richtte zich vervolgens naar het mondingsgebied van de Seine. In 890 viel hij de graaf van Bayeux aan. Hij roofde diens dochter, die hij huwde. In 892 belegerde hij tevergeefs Parijs, maar wel drong hij in die tijd tot in Lotharingen door. Intussen had hij zich reeds blijvend te Rouen gevestigd en zich van de heerschappij over het omliggende gebied verzekerd. In 911 erkende Karel III de Eenvoudige zijn status door hem bij het Verdrag van Saint-Clair-sur-Epte tot hertog van het sindsdien Normandië genoemde gebied te benoemen.
