Notes about Stefan Etienne de Blois

NOTE: STEFANUS VAN BLOIS Stefanus [Engeland] (ca. 1096 - Dover 25 okt. 1154),koning van Engeland van 1135 tot 1154, uit het Normandische Huis, was de oudste zoon van Stefanus, graaf van Blois en Chartres, en Adela, dochter van Willem de Veroveraar. Hij stond in bijzondere gunst bij zijn oom, koning Hendrik I, en werd door huwelijk graaf van Boulogne. Stefanus werd door de Normandische groten, in plaats van Mathilde, de dochter van Hendrik, als koning van Engeland erkend. Ondanks bekrachtiging van zijn verkiezing door paus Innocentius II had hij te kampen met verzet van Mathilde. In de nu volgende periode, in de Engelse geschiedenis de'Anarchie' genoemd, landde Mathilde in Engeland (1139); zij kreeg grote aanhang, en in febr. 1141 viel Stefanus in de Slag bij Lincoln in haar handen.
Hij werd weliswaar in november weer in vrijheid gesteld, maar kon zich slechts onder voortdurende strijd staande houden tegen Geoffroy Plantagenet, graaf van Anjou, de tweede echtgenoot van Mathilde. Tenslotte erkende Stefanus bij verdrag (nov. 1153) de zoon van Mathilde, Hendrik Plantagenet, als erfgenaam.
