Stryper kerkhof

Algemeen

Het Stryper Kerkhof is het oudste kerkhof van Terschelling. Onderzoek wijst erop dat er rond het jaar 900 al mensen begraven werden op het Stryper Kerkhof. Het kerkhof is vernoemd naar het Stryper Wyfke. In 1666 strijkten strijdlustige Engelsen neer op West-Terschelling. Ze staken het dorp in brand en trokken verder het eiland op. In de verte zagen de Engelsen een aantal schimmen en vroegen aan een vrouwtje, het Stryper Wyfke, wat de schimmen waren. Zij antwoorden: "ze staan er bij honderden en liggen er bij duizenden", doelend op het Stryper Kerkhof. De Engelsen dachten echter aan een leger Hollandse soldaten en trokken zich terug. Deze uitspraak zou Terschelling gered hebben van de ondergang.
