Traditioneel gekozen datum, een schippersjaar begon sinds onheugelijke tijden namelijk met Sint Pieter, en het eindige op 24 december. Acht weken hadden de schepen en hun opvarenden winterslaap. Toen Lammert en Jikke trouwden was die traditie echter al aan het vervagen. IJzeren schepen konden bij lichte ijsgang nog wel even doorvaren, wat met kwetsbaar hout onverantwoord was. Van Sint Pieter wisten de hervormde, gereformeerde of doopsgezinde schippers ook weinig meer. Zij hielden 'keuningsdei' aan, 19 februari, de verjaardag van Koning Willem III
