    Er bleek aanvankeljk zoveel water uit het veen te komen dat dit een vrij sterke stroming in het kanaal de Dedemsvaart veroorzaakte. Hierdoor ondervond met name de scheepvaart veel hinder. Van Dedem vond hiervoor een oplossing door een afvoerkanaaltje van de Pol langs de Mulderij naar de rivier de Reest aan te leggen. De Reest had namelijk een lager waterpeil
    dan de Dedemsvaart. Dicht bij de Reest woonde vanaf omstreeks 1830 de
    timmerman Roelof Schotkamp. Naar hem werd de wijk dan ook spoedig de Schotkampswijk genoemd. In de laaggelegen Reestlanden werd veel zogeheten
    sponturf (d.i. uit het laagveen gebaggerde turf) gewonnen. Omdat die turf
    door de Schotkampswijk werd afgevoerd werd de naam van de wijk al spoedig
    veranderd in Sponturfwijk. Een sluisje bij de weg over de Mulderij, ook wel
    het Schotkampssluisje genoemd, regelde de waterstand tussen de Dedemsvaart en de Reest.

    De Sponturfwijk was een van de oudste zijwijken van de Dedemsvaart.
    Over de gedempte wijk ligt een weg met nog steeds de naam Sponturfwijk.
    De wijk had zeven dwarswijken, waarvan de eerste de Geert Jagerswijk was.
