Notes about William BUCKMAN

History of Bucks County PA, p.673: William Buckman arrived on ship "Welcome" in October 1682 along with Sarah and Mary, and William Penn. William Penn set sail from England in August, 1682, with Captain Greenway, in the ship Welcome. The ship was filled with additional passengers, mostly Friends. They arrived at New Castle on October 27th, 1682, the next day arriving at Philadelphia. Penn and his friends came up from Chester in an open boat and landed on the low and sandy beach at Dock Creek. In Penn's Colony, Vol 1, Passengers and Ships: William Buckman, wife Mary, children Sarah and Mary arrived on the "Welcome". They lived near Penn in Sussex (there is still a Buckman's Corner just north of Chiltington) and they attended Shipley Meeting. Edward (William's father) and Thomas Buckman had bought 500 acres of land from Penn, but it seemed Edward died and William took his place on the "Welcome". Widow Buckman, Joan Bagham, arrived at the same time with sons, Edward, Thomas and daughter, Ruth. They reached Bucks county that fall when William arrived there and spent the first winter in a cave near Fallsington (not too uncomfortably perhaps as the widow had brought two thousand pounds of personal luggage with her). Later, in same book, William's wife's name is given as Sarah. It also says that Joan, Edward and Thomas did not survive the trip. More About WILLIAM BUCKMAN: Burial: August 11, 1716, Bucks county, PA Occupation: Carpenter Notes for SARAH ?: Sarah ? is reported to have died in childbirth - there is also a notation for the name Mary in parentheses - meaning not certain.
