Son and heir to Gilbert de Umfreville, a Norman and the feudal Baron of Prudhoe, and Maud, Countess of Angus and daughter of Malcolm, Earl of Angus.
Gilbert married Elizabeth Comyn, the daughter of Alexander Comyn, the Earl of Buchan and Elizabeth de Quincy, the daughter of Roger and Helen of Galloway. They had three sons; Gilbert, Robert the 3rd Earl and Thomas.
Gilbert inherited is mother's titles at an infant age while she was still alive and married to her third husband. Sir Simon de Montfort paid a hefty sum to become Gilbert's warden until adulthood.
Gilbert joined the Barons against the King, but made peace with Richard the night before the Battle of Evesham. Gilbert was employed by Kind Edward I in the Scottish wars, summoned to Parliament in 1295, and became Governor of Dundee and Forfar Castles as well as Angus, Scotland, which he refused to surrender to England without compensation from the corwn and the competitors to the Scottish crown. He paid homage to King Edward I as Overlord of Scotland in 1291, and fought at Falkirk in 1298.
