In Europa trouwde men voornamelijk tussen 25 en 30 jaar. Tegen het einde van de 18e eeuw en eerste helft of 3/4 van de 19e eeuw trouwde men zelfs nog later. De reden daartoe was dat men niet introuwde; De toenmalige agrarische maatschappij vereiste dat er een bedrijf vrij kwam om er zijn intrek in te nemen en een gezin te stichten. Door het verdwijnen van sterftecrisissen (pest enz) ontstond daar minder kans op. Dus pas trouwen als men zich kon vestigen en de kost verdienen. Rond 1800 laat ook de huisnijverheid het afweten door de opkomst van mechanische bedrijven. Vroeger kon men als thuiswever aan z'n trekken komen als er maar een stukje grond was voor de eigen teeltbehoeften. Maar ook dat laatste werd steeds minder mogelijk omdat de pacht- en grondpijzen de hoogte ingingen, als directe weerslag van de bevolkingsgroei. De enige onderbreking was het Frans Bewind omdat gehuwde jongeren geen legerdienst moest doen. Er werd vaak overhaast getrouwd om aan Napoleons legerdienst te ontsnappen. Omstreeks 1850 -1870 bleef een kwart tot een derde van de bevolking in Vlaanderen ongehuwd.
