2. Asse in de eerste helft van de 17de eeuw


 


Slachtoffer van een drietal brandstichtingen uit het voorlaatste decennium van de 16de eeuw, bood Asse-dorp bij het begin van de 17de eeuw nog steeds een troosteloze aanblik. Heel wat huizen waren nog niet of maar voorlopig hersteld en tal van akkers lagen nog braak. Het kerkgebouw stond nog overeind, maar pp verschillende plaatsen dreigde het dak in te storten. Herhaaldelijk vluchtten de inwoners, uit vrees voor plunderende benden, binnen de wallen van het versterkte kerkhof. Ze lieten daar hun dieren grazen en in het kerkgebouw stapelden ze allerhande gereedschap en voorraden op. Van 1594tot 1608 was ook geen afrekening van de parochiefinancies aan de landdeken meer voorgelegd.


 


Bij al de materiële zorgen voegde zich in de eerste helft van de 17de eeuw nog een andere gesel, nl. de pest en andere besmettelijke ziekten. Het ergste kwam in 1635-1636. Toen bezweken meer dan honderd mensen aan de pest. Het gasthuis liet voor de besmette dorpelingen in die jaren een drietal pesthuisjes optrekken "ter plaetse gheheeten Huyneghem, gemynlich genoempt de gasthuysweyde". Deze besmettelijke ziekten maaiden zo sterk onder de bewoners dat het bevolkingsaantal pas in 1635 opnieuw het peil van 1526 bereikte.
