Notes about JOHN HOGG (MA) PARTRIDGE

John Partridge Sr.
Birth: 15 Mar 1620 London, City of London, Greater London, England
Death: 28 May 1706 (aged 86) Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
Burial: Evergreen Cemetery, West Medway, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
Memorial #: 136970780
Bio: John Partridge came to Medfield from Dedham in 1653, and was probably accompanied by his brother William and sister Margery. He was in Dedham at least a year earlier than that, for on "ye 7 of ye 1 Mo. 1652" he shared with others in the division of 500 acres of land. Prior to these dates, nothing concerning them can yet (1903) be stated with certainty.

John and William both signed the proprietors' agreement drawn, it is supposed, by Ralph Wheelock, the founder of Medfield. They appear to have been useful citizens, each serving the town as selectman and John being chosen clerk of the market in 1672. In 1676, at the burning of Medfield by the Indians, John's house and barn were destroyed, together with a quantity of grain and several head of cattle and two horses. He married Magdelen Bullard, eldest daughter of John Bullard, one of the town's first settlers. They were married by Major Eleazer Lusher. John's will, written 20 June 1701, is at the Probate office in Boston; the signature is plain.

Nearly every Partridge adult was the owner of a home. They did not live in hired houses. Many a young man owned a farm and house before he had a wife. There was an old saying "get your cage, before you catch your bird." Nearly all Partridges marrried. Most lived very plainly. There was a strong desire that homesteads might continue in the possession of a son from generation to generation. The "visitations of essex" record arouses speculation that Bartholomew Partridge of Navestock married Pernell, dau. of John Greene of the same place. Their son, Captain John Partridge was the father of John "about 14 yeres 1634", William, Jane and Margaret. Three of these children may have settled in Medfield though it cannot now be proved. p.19 Dedham Historical Register vol. 8 (1896)

Mention is made of his sons John, Eleazer, Samuel, and Zachariah; daughters mentioned were Rachel, wife of Theophilus Clark; and three of his grandchildren: Eleazer Adams, Abadiah Adams, and Hannah Rockwood. - See more at: http://www.wellswooster.co

Notice of Resolution of Ambiguous Parentage
This profile has been edited with regard to parents in accordance with WikiTree principles. Genealogy is not an exact science, and digital collaborative genealogy must therefore occasionally make choices where old fashioned print scholarship did not have to. The parents (or lack of parents) of John Partridge are in question. Some think his parents wereJohn PartridgeandJane Hogg.Available evidence disproves that lineage.[1]Since his various parentages are unproven and in dispute, they have been removed, and John Partridge is shown without parents until definitive evidence can be found as to his parentage.
Please,DO NOTadd John Partridge and Jane Hogg back as the parents of John Partridge.
Incorrect Parentage
John Partridge and Jane Hogg are not the parents of John Partridge of Medfield. This was a suggestion which was made more than a century ago but was almost immediately disproved.
1First there is absolutely no evidence which directly connects John Partridge to Navestock. It was an incorrect guess based on no more than similar names.
2The John Partridge of Navestock who was proposed to be John Partridge of Medfield died in Navestock on 24 March 1653.
3William Partridge, brother of Partridge of Navestock, who was also supposed to have immigrated to New England actually was found to have been born in 1625 and to have been buried in Navestock in 1629. So, the immigrant William Partridge cannot be the one noted in the Visitation of Essex.
Biography
A John Partridge was baptized on 7 Oct 1622 at Great Bromley, Essex, England.[2]Is this the same John Partridge?
George Homer Partridge suggested that John Partridge was born about 1620 at Navestock, Essex, England.[3]Cutter posits that the name Partridge is of Norman origin, originally "de Petriche" before it was anglicized. He states: " John Partridge, of Medfield, Massachusetts, was the first in America of one branch of this family." (Cutter also states that "It is thought that he was a son of Captain John Partridge, of Navestock, county Essex, England," but this descendancy has been disproven.)[4]
"John, the emigrant, first came to our notice while they are en route to New England, May 18, 1650. On that day they subscribed as witnesses to the will of one John Beebe, a fellow passenger, who was taken suddenly ill and died during the voyage. This will, with the original signatures of John and William Paretridge, is on file at the state house, Hartford, Connecticut. (also copied in the NE genealogy -- MS)"[4](The name of a John Partridge appears as the 119th signer of the covenant of Dedham, establishing Dedham Massachusetts in 1636,[5], but this may not be the same John Partridge if they didn't emigrate until 1650.Watt-26617:43, 2 March 2015 (EST))
The brothers, John and William, apparently located in Dedham, near Boston, where in 1652 they shared in a division of lands. (Dedham Town Rec.'s, Vol. III., p. 211). In 1653 they removed to Medfield, which in that year was set off from Dedham as a separate town. They signed the Proprietors' agreement, and each took up his residence in 'Ye Bachelors' Roe', now North street. His place was near his brother William, and Thomas Mason, later husband of Margery Partridge. John and William both signed the proprietors agreement of Medfield.[4][6]
On 18 December 1655, John, married Magdalen Bullard,[7]at age 20, daughter of John Bullard and Magdalen Martyn, in Medfield, Norfolk, Massachusetts. By Capt Lusher. Their marriage date was recorded as 18 (10) 1655. (John and Magdalen Bullard were early of Watertown and later of Medfield.) John and Magdalen Partridge had the following children:
1John Partridge, born 21 Sep 1656; married Elizabeth Rockwood, then Elizabeth Adams, then Hannah Sheffield.
2Hannah Partridge, born 15 Apr 1658, Medfield;[8]married Joseph Rockwood.
3Mary Partridge, born 1660.
4Deborah Partridge, born 16 Aug 1662, Medfield;[9]married John Adams.
5Eleazer Partridge, born 20 Feb 1664-5, Medfield;[9]married Elizabeth Smith, then Elizabeth Allen.
6Abiel Partridge, twin born 13 June 1667, Medfield; she died at about 2 1/2 weeks old.[9]
7Experience Partridge, twin born 13 June 1667, Medfield; she died at 3 weeks old.[9]
8Rachel Partridge, born 12 July 1669, Medfield;[8]married Joseph Daniel, then Theophilus Clark.
9Samuel Partridge, born 22 February 1671-22, Medfield;[8]married Hannah Mason.
10Zachariah Partridge, born 02 July 1674, Medfield;[8]married Mary Ellis.
The John Partridge House, built in 1659, is a fine example of early colonial architecture. Much of the original house remains and includes wide-board floors, beehive ovens, exposed hand-hewn beams and exposed second floor joists, hand-forged hardware, vertical-plank interior walls, pegged guillotine windows and hand made window panes. John Partridge Jr. built the home in 1659 after receiving a grant from the town of Medfield. Later, in 1682, John was joined by his father, John Sr. In 1974, 315 years after its building, the John Partridge House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. You can see a picture of the house atMACRIS.
In 1660, John Partridge was one of those who received a copy of the "law book" for his neighborhood.[10]He served in 1672 as the Clerk of the Market and town selectman.[4][11]In 1676, at the burning of Medfield by the Indians, John's house and barn were destroyed, together with a quantity of grain and several head of cattle during King Philip's War.[12]His name appears among the list of contributors towards the founding of Harvard College.[4]
John "Partredge" Sr. died on May 28 170-[6] at Medfield, Suffolk (now Norfolk), Massachusetts.[13]His Will was proved on June 25, 1706. Mention is made of sons John, Eleazer, Samuel, and Zachariah; daughters mentioned were Rachel, wife of Theophilus Clark; and three grandchildren: Eleazer Adams, Abadiah Adams, and Hannah Rockwood.[14]
