Bio: Eli was the son of William and Sally (Gartner) Dykes. He was born in Virginia (possibly in Greenbrier County in what is now West Virginia). He moved with his family to Pulaski County around 1816 or 1817 after a brief stay in Tennessee where is brother, Peter was born. The community of Dykes, Kentucky is named for William & Sally's descendants.
Eli married Sarah Jane Meece on December 16, 1833 in Pulaski County, Kentucky.
Eli was granted 50 acres on the waters of Buck Creek on August 1, 1838, and was granted an additional 16 acres on January 30, 1845.
According to family legend, Eli had a large goiter, and wore a red bandana to support it.
Also according to family legend, he was carried on his bed to the Dykes Ford in Buck Creek to be baptized shortly before his death.
