Edward ELLIS 03 Oct 1655 in Surry County, Va

By 1655, Edward Ellis was living on property on Chippeakes Creek in Surry County, Va. No actual deed for Edwards land has been located in the early records of Va., but a deed dated October 3, 1655 states, "Richard Hyde of Chippoakes Creek conveyed to Chirstopher Greenfield 50 acres of land beginning at a marked poplar by the swamp side which divided ye land from Edward Ellis.

He immigrated 1636 to Jamestown, James City County, VA. Also reference book "History of Twelve Generations of the Ellis Family, 1636-1974", by Ann Ellis Sheek, Ch. 1, page 3, Chapter 2, page 5-6 & 7. This book available on microfilm from the LDS Family History Library, # 0908709, & some excerpts follow.

Edward Ellis was of English or Welsh origin. In 1636, or perhaps a little earlier, he was a emigrant to the British Colony in Virginia.

On page 41 in the book "Cavaliers & Pioneers" by Nell Marion Nugent, Benjamin Carrill assigned to Nathan Martin his right to 200 acres of land based on the fact that he, Carrill had brought into the colony the following persons: Edward Ellis, Jonathon Dawson, Eliza. Talley and Alex Norey.

On May 16, 1638, Benjamin Carrill obtained a grant of land of 700 acres based on the transportation of himself and wife, plus 12 other persons: Henry Carrill, Ann Peterson, Rich. Reeks, James Whitehead, William Hills, Edmund Camellin, Edward Ellis, Eliza Talley, Humphry Williams, Jonathan Dawson, Laur. Jackson and Alex Norey.

Evidently Carrill obtained a return from Nathan Martin of the "rights" based on the transportation of these people to the colony of Virginia.

Carrill must have been a man of wealth, since he had paid for the passage of 14 people to the new country, and, the people he transported do not appear to have been financially independant.

These "indentured servants", whatever their origions, had to sign contracts agreeing to sell there services from 4 to 7 years to pay their passage to the new world.

When the terms of their service were completed, the immigrants were given freedom dues in the form of shoes, three barrells of corn, farming tools, and sometimes land. They were then allowed to start planting on their own.

Between 1620 and 1642, there were about 8,000 English Colonists settling in Virginia. One of these was Edward Ellis. He was a Settler & Farmer 1655 in Surry County, Va..

Edward Ellis lived in James City County, Virginia, in the part that became Surry County in 1652.

Also, on June 3, 1658, Edward Ellis of Surry County purchased two cows and all the hogs belonging to Edward Greenwood's estate. Surry County Deeds book 1, page 85.

He was born abt 1615 in Wales/England. He died abt 1670 in Surry County, Va.. On the list of tithables of taxable residents of Southwark Parish in Surry County for June 1668 and June 1669, Edward Ellis and Jeremiah Ellis are listed in close order, indicating that they probably lived side by side. Edward was not included on the tithable list for 1670

Edward Ellis married prior to the birth of Jeremiah, which is accepted to be 1643.

The land record dated 3 October 1655 is very important, because it indicates that Edward Ellis was the father of Jeremiah. Later, Edward bought 50 acres out of the estate of Richard Hyde.

In the Surry County Deeds of 1671-84, page 244, dated December 31 1677 states, " Jeremiah Ellis to Hezekiah Bunnell 150 acres upon Cripock Creek in the County of Surry and bounding upon ye said creek and northerly upon Dr. lies land, and westerly upon Richard Hydes land, fifty being bought out of ye land of Richard Hyde."

The creek is spelled Chipoak in this deed and is located on the line between Surry and Prince George Counties.

With the mention of Richard Hyde in both deeds, and the creek basically spelled the same and in the same location, geneologists believe that this land of Edward and later of Jeremiah Ellis was passed down by inheritance from father to son, and establishing the father-son relationship.
