Bio: Andrew WARNER was born by about 1594/5, the son of John and Mary (PURCHAS) WARNER of Great Waltham, Essexshire, England who later moved to neighboring Hatfield Broad Oak. The will of his father John Warner of Hatfield, Broad Oak, dated 16 Jul 1614 mentions that Andrew had five siblings in this order: Thomas, John, [Andrew], Edward, Elizabeth and Rose. Notice that Andrew's placement between his brothers John and Edward indicates that he was probably the third and not the first born son.

Andrew WARNER was a farmer, trader, and malster who settled in Hatfield Broad Oak, Essexshire, England. He married (1st) Mary HUMPHREY (1624-1656) at Thaxted, Essexshire, England, on 5 Oct 1624. (The original marriage record reads: "Andrew Warner of Hatfield Magna married Mary HUMFREY daughter of Robert of Thaxted.") Mary was baptized at Thaxted on 13d 2m 1602/03 the daughter of Robert & Ann (HOLLAND) HUMPHREY. Andrew & Mary eventually had eight children but just these five are the ones who were or appear to have been born in England:

1) Isaac WARNER died 1691
2) John WARNER (1625-1700)
3) Mary (WARNER) STEELE-HILLS born or baptised 1626
4) Andrew Jr. WARNER (1628-1680)
5) Robert WARNER (1630-1690)

By religious belief Andrew was a Puritan. He was a congregant of Rev. Thomas HOOKEr and had apparently met Rev. HOOKER in England as the latter was from neighboring Chelmsford, Essexshire where he is known to have preached from 1626-29. Chelmsford is only 16 miles from Hatfield Broad Oak. It was at this time that the Puritans were experiencing grave political problems. The incumbent monarch, King Charles I, was a very orthodox "high church" Anglican who was heavily influenced by his wife Queen Henrietta Maria who was a fils de Francais (a French Princess) and a very orthodox Roman Catholic. Due to the religious persecutions, many Puritans decided to leave England.

Andrew WARNER & his wife Mary and their young children boarded the "Lyon" 23 Aug 1631 at Bristol, England whose master was William Peirce LYON. She left London about August 23 1631 and arrived at Nantasket the following 2nd of November at Nantasket, Plymouth Colony (a beach which is part of the town of Hull, Plymouth Co, Massachusetts) bringing "in all about sixty persons." (V. C. Sanborn, in Genealogist, XIX, 270) She completed her journey to the newly established (1630) English colony of Massachusetts Bay on 7 Jan 1632/33.

The WARNERs first settled in "Newtowne" (soon after renamed Cambridge), Middlesex Co, Massachusetts. His homestead there was very near the acreage where Harvard University now stands. On 14 May 1634 Andrew WARNER was sworn in as a freeman of Massachusetts Bay Colony. During this time Andrew & Mary had two more children born at Cambridge:

6) Hannah (WARNER) PRATT (1632/33 Sep 1682)
7) Daniel Sr. WARNER (1632-35-30 Apr 1692)

A few months after Andrew WARNER and his family settled in Cambridge, Rev. Thomas HOOKER also emigrated to Massachusetts. He arrived on 4 Sep 1633 and was installed as Pastor of the Church of Cambridge. In 1636 he decided to move to Hartford, Hartford Co, Connecticut and several members of his congregation followed him there, including Andrew WARNER and his family.

Andrew WARNER was actually among the founding father's of Hartford (which is why his name appears on the Hartford Founders' Memorial) and prospered in the town both financially and spiritually. He was elected Deacon of the Church of Hartford. A few years after settling in Hartford, Andrew & Mary's youngest child was born:

8) Ruth (WARNER) KELLOGG born 1641

In 1648 Andrew & Mary moved their family to the neighboring town of Farmington but they returned to Hartford in 1650 where Mary later died. By 1657 Andrew Sr. WARNER married (2nd) to Esther (WAKEMAN) SELDEN, widow of Thomas SELDEN by whom she had a very large family and sister of SAMUEL WAKEMAN. The several children Andrew & Esther each had from their first marriages made for a no doubt very large and lively household.

Andrew & Esther decided to move their combined family to Hadley, Hampshire Co, Massachusetts in 1659. This was part of a migration of several Connecticut families west and north upstream along the Connecticut River to the newly established town of Hadley, Hampshire Co, Massachusetts. After their arrival the WARNER-SELDEN family was joined by the birth of the one child Andrew & Esther had together:

9) Jacob WARNER (1666-1711)

Andrew Sr. WARNER died 18 Dec 1684 in Hadley, Hampshire Co, Massachusetts. His widow Esther died by 27 Sep 1693 when her sons Thomas and Joseph SELDEN were named co-executors of her estate.

It is not known where Andrew and his wives are buried. I treerpgmo would guess that he was probably buried in either Hadley where he died or perhaps neighboring Hatfield which is a daughter town just west across from the Connecticut River from Hadley. Indeed land owned by Andrew's son Daniel Sr. WARNER fell into the new town of Hatfield when she was separated from Hadley. The memorial at Hartford, which is sometimes called the Founders Memorial, is merely a commeration of Andrew WARNER and contemporaries as fathers of Hartford and is certainly not his actual place of burial.

Even when Andrew's SELDEN step-children are excluded, he was the father of a very large family and his grandchildren were associated with both Connecticut (as not all of his by then adult children in 1659 followed him to Hadley) and Hampshire Co, Massachusetts which was then on the frontier of New England.

Andrew Sr. WARNER has several famous descendants. Two worthy of note are:

Gen. George Briton Jr. McCLELLAN (1826-1885): He is noted for his Command of the Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War and his phyrrhic victory at the Battle of Antietam (1862) and subsequent failure to destroy the Army of Northern Virginia led by Gen. Robert Edward LEE. He later suffered a downward fall from clear front runner to landslide loss to incumbent President Abraham LINCOLN in the 1864 Presidential Election. McCLELLAN later salvaged his political career by being elected (1877) Governnor of New Jersey.

Former Governor Willard Mitt ROMNEY of Massachusetts was the 2012 Republican Presidential Nominee. He is the son late Gov. George ROMNEY of Michigan but Mitt's WARNER descent actually comes from his mother Lenore (LeFONT) ROMNEY who was the 1970 Republican Federal Senate Nominee for Michigan.
