Biography
Disputed Origins
We have conflicting information about his origins:
•John was baptized 21 Jun 1594 Holy Cross, Felstead, Essex, England.[1]
•Another source claims he was born at Wrax Hall Abbey near Kenilworth.[citation needed]
•Thomas Porter has been detached as his son, since there is no evidence of the relationship.
Emigration
There are also two conflicting theories about his emigration:
•John, his wife Rose and their children sailed from London in the ship Anne arriving at Dorchester Mass. 30 May 1627.[citation needed]
•John was possibly aboard the Susan and Ellen, along with his brother in law, Joseph Loomis.[2]
He may have briefly settled at Dorchester, but accompanied Rev. Ephraim Hewitt to Connecticut. (If he came with Joseph Loomis, they likely came from Cambridge as that is where the Susan and Ellen arrived.)
Life in New England
John was one of the first settlers of Windsor, Hartford CT, listed in the town records in 1640.[3]
In 1648 he became a Constable.[citation needed] Was this, possibly, his son?
He couldn't possibly be the John Porter who took the Oath as a freeman in 1669, since he had been dead 20 years.
[When?] John was fined 70 rods of corn for property damage.[4]
His last will and testament is dated April 20,1648 and it can be found in the Connecticut Colonial Records.
