Memorial #: 12888885
Bio: Son of Robert Taliaferro who immigrated from Middlesex, ENG. Husband of Sarah (Smith). This man was Lt. Col. John "The Ranger" Taliaferro, Sr. Colonel in the Caroline Company of Rangers Lieutenant, County Militia-Rangers, James City, VA 13 Jan 1692; member of the House of Burgesses for Essex County 17 Apr 1699; on 19 Jun 1699, appointed Sheriff of Essex County, VA. and Justice of Essex Co., VA 8 Jul 1702, along with Francis Taliaferro [probably his uncle]. Quit Rent Rolls of 1704: had 2,000 acres in Essex Co., Va. Also listed in Essex Co. are Francis and Charles We really do not know when he died.

Lt. Col. John "The Ranger" Taliaferro signed his will on 1 Jun 1715 and devised property to his son, John Taliarerro; to his daughter, Mary Taliaferro (Thornton); to sons--Robert, Richard, Charles, Lawrence, Zachariah, and William Taliaferro; to his daughters Sarah, Elizabeth, Catherine Taliaferro; to his wife; and to his brother, Francis Taliaferro. John's will recorded on 20 Jun 1715. The inventory of his estate was made in August, 1715.

Thornton had ancestors who were among the most ancient in Europe. This was the Taliaferro family of Tuscany, Italy, one of whose members is said to have migrated to Normandy in the year 868, and whose descendant–a Taliaferro–was "among those present" when William the Conqueror successfully invaded Saxon England on Christmas Day, 1066. The mother of Elizabeth and Mildred Thornton (both of whom married a Meriwether) was Mary Taliaferro who married Francis Thornton, Sr.
