John Perkins, senior was among the earliest emigrants from the mother country, sailing from Bristol, England 1 Dec 1630/1 in the ship "Lyon" William Pierce, master, with "about" 20 passengers and 200 tons of goods, and arrived 5 Feb 1630/1 at Salem, MA. John Perkins 47, of Hilmorton, Warwick, bound for Boston Mrs. Judith Perkins aged 42, John [Jr.] aged 22, Elizabeth aged 20, Mary aged 15, Ann 13, Thomas 9, Jacob 3 . Of historical note, Rev. Roger Williams, afterward of famous divine, was a fellow passenger. Upon arrival in the Americas in Nantasket 5 Feb 1631 John and his family spent the following 2 years in Boston.

The 18th of May 1631 he took the oath of freeman, admitting him to all the civil rights of the colony. He removed from Boston with his family in 1633 to the colony then newly founded by John Winthrop and others at Ipswich. Here he was largely engaged in agriculture, and had several grants of land; the location of his house was near the river, at the entrance to Jeffries neck, on what is now East Street, where he had considerable land granted him.
