John Baptist Cassidy also known as Baptist John Cassidy, came to Washington Co. Kentucky late 1790's.
CASSIDY FAMILY HISTORY
The Cassidy s in Perry County are nearly all descendants of Patrick Cassidy, who was born in Newry County, down North Ireland, in 1738 and came to America about 1754 with General Edward Braddock's army, which included The Fifth Foot Regiment commanded by Colonel William Shirley, later promoted to Major General and adjutant to General Braddock. (The above information obtained from House of Records in London).
Africa's 1883 history of Huntingdon and Blair Counties of Pennsylvania states that Patrick Cassidy came to America when a mere boy "in a capacity of a servant to a British army officer". The officer was Captain William Shirley whose family was a prominent Monaghan County, Ireland, family and friends of the Cassidy's. Patrick and Shirley were apparently a part of Braddock's force when Braddock attacked Fort Duquense. Braddock and Shirley were both wounded in the battle and died a few days later.
Note 1: The remnants of Braddock's army returned to England, but Cassidy somehow obtained his release and remained in Pennsylvania, and all that is known of his later activities is contained in the following chapter from Africa's history.
Note 2: Some records refer to him as Lt. Patrick Cassidy, but at his young age he could not have been a regular officer of the British army, but he could have been brevetted on the battlefield at Fort Duquense.
