*Uit het huwelijk (getrouwd op 30 juli 1382) van Jan III met gravin Oda van Salm-Ravenstein (1370–1428) werd alleen een dochter, Johanna van Polanen, geboren. Zij werd in 1404 uitgehuwelijkt aan Engelbrecht I van Nassau. Daarmee ging het grootgrondbezit van de Polanens over op het geslacht Nassau.

*''In het testament van 1394 van Jan III'' wordt ook melding gemaakt van ''drie bastaardkinderen'', twee zonen en een dochter:
* een zoon
* Jan van der Lek, geheten Grimhuysen, heer van de Lek. Hij trouwde met Aleid van Egmond. Uit zijn huwelijk werd geboren:
* Maria van der Lek. Zij trouwde met Willem I van Beieren-Schagen
* Oda van der Lek.
