Thomas Cross was a convict, born around 1777 in Hertfordshire, England. At the age of 33 he was tried and convicted, then sent to Australia onboard the Admiral Gambier" that arrived 29th September, 1811". Thomas Cross and John Crowley became employed to build the road over the Blue Mountains. John Crowley married Jane Charlotte Bryant, the older sister of Martha Cross.
