Notes about Jane Pope

Daphne MacGregor (nee Newton) has a framed charcoal sketch of Granny Nowland hanging in her bedroom. The picture itself is about 40 x 60cm. On the reverse, written at different times by different people as the picture is handed down from mother to daughter, it says:

Henry transported to NSW, arriving 26-1-1815

Jane followed 5 months later with their 5 children

1. Reuben 2. Francis 3. Henry Jnr. 4. George 5. Thomas.

They moved to Wilberforce in 1816 where their 6th child (Jane Jnr.)

was born. Francis died within a month of arrival!

Henry Greentree Snr. died 1818, leaving Jane alone with 5 children.

Many years later, Jane re-married to Michael Nowland, who was 10 years her junior and died within 11 years, leaving Jane once again a widow. She was buried in the Nowland crypt on her death.

Her oldest son, Reuben, married Ann Farlow in 1825, they having 8 children - Mary Ann, Robert, Ann, Elizabeth Jane, Maria, Henry, George and Reuben Jnr.

Mary Ann married David Wenban, they settling first at Wilberforce. David Wenban built the historic ’Wisteria House’ at Wilberforce, before the 1867 flood disaster.

After the flood, Wenban sold ’Wisteria House’ to Mary Ann’s brother Robert, who after a year, resold to their youngest brother Reuben Jnr.

The Wenbans moved to Spring Ridge near Orange about 1868 and built their new home there, calling it ’Elmswood’.
