Toen hij 16 jaar oud was is hij ingetreden bij de Trappisten in de Achelse Kluis; gekleed 17.09.1906. Hij was echter te opgewekt van aard, liep altijd en overal te zingen (niet zo ongewoon op die leeftijd), zodat men hem toch niet geschikt vond voor het trappistenleven; dat was in die dagen nog heel erg streng en hard. Hij werd daarom weer naar huis gestuurd op 07.06.1907. Hij moet nadien nog vele malen de kluis hebben bezocht.
