On June 1, 1862, Henry enlisted in Company D, 19th Regiment of the Arkansas Infantry (Dawson's) of the Confederacy. He enlisted in Polk County. On January 11, 1863 he was captured at the Arkansas Post, Fort Hindman. He was taken to Camp Douglas, Illinois by train, and later died on March 3rd, 1863 of typhoid fever.
Arkansas Post was established in 1686. Located originally on the north bank of the Arkansas River. It was under Spanish control until the Louisiana Purchase. The post was then officially transferred to First Lieutenant James B. Many on March 23, 1804. In 1805 a government Indian factory was established at the post. In 1819, Arkansas Post became the first territorial capital of Arkansas and so remained for about two years. Fort Hindman was established at Arkansas Post by the Confederacy. The troops garrisoning here consisted of three brigades, mostly Texan, and commanded by Cols. Garland, Deshler, and Dunnington. The whole division was under the command of Brigadier General T. J. Churchill. On the 9th of January a scout from below brought intelligence to Churchill of a Yankee gunboat having made its appearance on the Arkansas River, thirty miles below the Post. Hours later, on the same day, another scout brought news of other gunboats, and transports making there way up the river, Churchill ordered everything ready for an attack. About 9-10 o'clock the next morning shelling commenced. Our troops held the position. Just as darkness was drawing near four gunboats approached the fort and commenced their bombardment, our guns answered gallantly. The next morning, the enemy renewed the attack with gunboats and land forces. They has also erected a battery on the opposite side of the river. The firing continued until about 4pm when Gen. Churchill, seeing his defenses exposed to a raking fire and storming parties surrendered, making more than three thousand men prisoners. These men were then transferred to Camp Douglas where within a month, 10 percent died due to the fact that the camp was on low ground, the drainage bad, and conditions generally were unsanitary. The high death toll was due to the ignorance or indifference of their keepers. It was not a contemplated part of the war to allow such things to happen, but those in charge of the prisoners were often hampered by lack of appropriations and delay in delivering supplies.
The question of the proper feeding and adequate housing of prisoners in sanitary surroundings remained unsolved by either side until the close of the conflict.
I have numerous articles on Arkansas Post and Camp Douglas. I also have some of Henry civil war documents. I have a copy of his marriage license.
