Notes about Bennett Washington Burns

BW fought in the Civil War. He was discharged as a Private of Captain Reed, Co. 86, 3rd Arkansas, was enlisted by Lt. Allan of the 3rd Regiment of Arkansas Volunteers at Tyro, Drew Co. Arkansas on March 13, 1862. He was 40 years old at the time, 5 feet 9 1/2 inches tall, had auburn hair and blue eyes. He was discharged on 6 August 1862 at Camp Lee. The discharge was given because of paralysis of the right hand and arm. On January 1, 1864, he re-enlisted and was captured at Longview, Arkansas on march 29, 1864. BW was confined to Rock Island, Illinois, then exchanged at Red River landing, Louisiana, March 4, 1865. We visited Tyro in May of 1995, only to find the sign saying Tyro and a cemetery. His first wife, Elizabeth died shortly after the 1880 census was taken. Both are buried at Bear Creek Cemetery. I hired someone to go there and take pictures. Unforturnitely, they only show tall grass and the graves were not found.

Census 1850 Tishomingo Co. MS. Shows William, James, John, and Jane.

Census 1860 Drew Co. AR. Shows 8 children and was taken after Lewis was born.
