Notes about Jack Winkleman


John "Jack" J. Winkleman, age 79, of Lynden, went home to Heaven on Thursday, August 30, 2012. He was born May 30, 1933 in Geneva, IL to August W. and Amelia M. (Jensen) Winkleman. His mother died a few days later. Jack's father was re-married to Phyllis Stokoe and together they raised their family in Des Moines, Iowa where Jack, as a young adult, farmed, managed stores and worked in the heating and A/C business. He married his first wife, Marilyn in 1952 and in 1965 they moved their family to Southern California where Jack worked many years as a machinist in the aircraft industry. In retirement, they moved to Puyallup, WA in the early 1990's where he owned/managed apartments. Following Marilyn's death in 1999, he later reconnected with a former friend from California and on Sept. 28, 2002, Jack married Marlene (Bauman) Broersma in Lynden.

Grounded in his Christian faith at an early age, Jack was active in various Baptist churches throughout his life; serving as Sunday School teacher, deacon, usher and on various committees. He was currently a faithful member of Grace Baptist Fellowship in Lynden. Jack was a true gentleman and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Marilyn; Jack is survived by his wife, Marlene; children Jim (Pam) Winkleman of Houston, TX; Julie (Charley) Flood of Las Vegas, NV; Jean Rudolph of San Mateo, CA; Joyce Winkleman of Lakewood, WA; 32 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; brothers Gerald (Gretchen) Winkleman of Prescott, AZ and Earl (Ruth) Winkleman of Grand Prairie, TX; sister Priscilla (Clair)Williams of Worthington, MN; sisters-in-law Ruth Honcoop of Bellingham, WA and Lorna Wieldraayer of Oak Harbor, WA; step-children A. Dale (Kim) Broersma, Marilyn Broersma, all of Lynden; Kent (Charlann) Broersma of Yucaipa, CA and Joan (Bob) Reinders of Houston, TX.

Visitation hours are scheduled Thursday, Sept. 6, 5 to 8 pm at Gillies Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, Sept. 7, 12:30 pm at Mountain View Cemetery in Tacoma and a memorial service will be held Sat. Sept. 8, 1:30 pm at Grace Baptist Fellowship, 338 N. Park St., Lynden, WA 98264. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Fellowship at the above address or a favorite charity.
