Notes about Col. George Gillespie Jr

The Whitehills in America (heroes and Heroines)

...The story that Col. George was the son of the George Gillespie who married Elizabeth Duval is incorrect in my opinion. It is likely that this latter George was Col. George's grandfather. There is much confusion about this line of ancestry but I believe the George who married a Duval had three sons: George, John and David and that this David was Col. George's father. This was the result obtained by a Gillespie researcher, the Rev. John Douglas Gillespie, a fellow descendant of the old Col. George. Certainly these Gillespie families had a common origin in northern Ireland's county Antrim and before that from Scotland and, of course, before any of these from Dalriada, Ireland, truly Scot-Irish people.

The problem with the ancestry of these Gillespies is that there were about 30 George Gillespies roaming through the wilderness that was America in the 1700s...
