Notes about Howard O. Schutte


Howard O. Schutte, 82, longtime Burlington resident peacefully passed away at his home with his family continually by his side on May 3, 2008. Born July 21, 1925, in Lynden, Washington, he was the son of G. John and Tena (Stapp) Schutte. Howard attended and graduated from the Lynden Schools.

In 1945, he met the love of his life, Lois Alma Frazier in front of the Birch Bay Roller Rink. On July 12, 1946, they were united in marriage in Lynden, WA.

Their first home was on the Fircrest Dairy Farm in Lynden, where their first two sons were born, Ron and Bob. After ten years on the farm, Howard made a career change to the frozen food industry, PicSweet/Stokley in Mount Vernon.

In 1956, the family moved to Ellensburg, WA, where their third son, Gerry, was born. The family relocated several times-including to LaConner, Whatcom county (Meridian), Edison, and finally to Burlington. In 1967 Howard & Lois built their home in Burlington.

Howard retired as plant manager from Twin City Foods, Inc, Stanwood, in 1990. After his retirement, Howard and Lois enjoyed many travels including across the United States, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and several trips to Arizona. They thoroughly enjoyed their time together in the motor home, especially when they could include the grandchildren.

Howard enjoyed the family gatherings and reunions, especially when there was dancing. Lois & Howard attended many dances throughout their 54 years of marriage.

The grandchildren affectionately referred to him as "Grandpa HOS". He was always interested to know what the grandchildren were doing whether that included school, sports, their employment, or their new "significant other". Grandpa Hos loved to greet his grandsons with his "special handshake", demonstrating his strength in his hands.

He enjoyed working in his garden and sharing the fruits-or vegetables- of his labor with the entire family and his neighbors.

His wife, Lois, preceded him in death on July 14, 2000. His parents, his brothers, Jacob and Richard, and his sister, Henrietta, also preceded him in death, as well as his brothers-in-law, Art, Norman, & Al, and his sister-in-law, Elsie.

Survivors include his three sons and their wives, Ron & Karen Schutte of Bow, Bob & Barbara Schutte of American Falls, ID, and Gerry & Pam Schutte of Burlington. He is also survived by his sister, Thelma Terpstra of Lynden, and brother, Harold of Orlando, FL., and thirteen grandchildren, Kimberly Probstfield (Dave Fernandez), Renee Perry (Tom), Ryan Schutte (Tisha), David Schutte (Julie), Jon Schutte (Shelly), Jeff Schutte (Danielle), Taryn Schutte, Michael Schutte, Marcus Schutte (Hailey), Stacy Schutte, Angelyn (Bryan) Harris, Carly (Brian) Nicol, and Julia (Gabe) Langston; nine great-grandchildren, Ryann & Jacob Probstfield, Janell & Trent Fernandez, Mattox Perry, Cody Goodman, Tucker Schutte, Madelyn & Ayden Harris, with the tenth great-granddaughter due any time. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law in Canada, Inga Frost, Alberta, and Connie (Russell) White, B. C., one brother-in-law, Jim (Morna) Frazier, Marysville, WA, and his special friend, Florence Wickstrom of Burlington.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 7th, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Thursday, May 8th, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Hulbush Funeral Home, Burlington, WA.

Funeral Services will be held May 8, 2008, at 2:00 PM at the Edison Lutheran Church, 14201 Church Rd, Bow, WA 98232. Interment will be at Hawthorne Memorial Park.

Remembrances are suggested to the Burlington Fire Department or your charity of choice.
