Mrs. M. Van Donge, 99, Passes Away Thursday (December 13,1963)
Hold Rites Monday for Oldest Citizen
Funeral services were held at the First Christian Reformed church here at 1:30 p.m. Monday for Mrs. Maggie Van Donge, 99, Sioux Center's eldest citizen, a resident of the community since 1918, who died at the Nursing Wing of the Sioux Center Community hospital Thursday following a brief illness.
She had resided in the Nursing wing the past three years.
Services were conducted by the Rev. B. J. Haan and burial was made in the Sioux Center Community cemetery under the direction of Cooperative Funeral Services.
Mr.s Van Donge was born in the providence Friesland (The Netherlands) March 11, 1863, the daughter of Bart Nauta and Jessie Annama. At the age of 5 she immigrated with her parents to the U.S. and lived for a short time in Michigan, prior to moving to Dispatch, Kan. There she grew to womanhood and was married to Peter Van Donge.
In 1918 she moved with her husband and children to Sioux Center. Mr. Van Donge died six years later on November 22, 1924. Mrs. Van Donge lived after that time with her various children until moving to the local Nursing wing. Survivors include four sons, Dan of Soldier, Kansas,Paul and Bart of Sioux Center, Edward of Ireton, six daughters, Mrs. Henry Koops, Mrs. Albert DeRaad, Mrs. Ben Koops all of Denver, Colo. Mrs. Lena Boxum of Cawker City Kansas, Mrs. Fred Spaid of Lebano, Kansas, Mrs. Ralph Lammersof Sioux Center, two brothers Corneliun Nauta, and Sam Nauta both of Raton New Mexico and three sisters, Mrs. Kate Otte of Downs, Kansas, Mrs. Mary Preston of Folsum, New Mexico, and Mrs. Sarah Tondrow of Florida. She is also survived by 37 grandchildren, 106 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and one sister. Had she lived to March 11, 1963, Mrs. Van Donge would have observed her 100th birthday.
