Dea. IVORY6 DOUGLAS ( William5, William4, Richard3, William2, William1), born in New London, Conn., in .1761; married Phebe, daughter of Nathan Smith, of Groton. In 1789 he removed, with his brothers, William and Caleb, to Vermont, and settled with Caleb in Chelsea. They were the fourth white family to settle in the town. He was chosen one of the first two deacons of the Congregational church which was formed in Chelsea in 1789. In the year 1825, being then 65 years of age, he went with his wife, in their own conveyance, to New London. While visiting their friends there, they walked one evening down to Shaw's neck, and while his wife walked upon the shore he went in to bathe, and was drowned, on the first day of August. It is supposed he was seized with cramp or convulsions of some kind. As the weather was warm he was buried at New London. His widow returned to Vermont, where she died, Feb. 10, 1853, aged 86 years.
