Notes about Clarence (Klaas) Friend

Clarence (Klaas) Friend, 79, of Zillah, WA went to be with his Lord and Savior on Christmas morning, December 25, 2013. Clarence lived a life of service dedicated to God, family, church, and community.

Clarence was born to Klaas and Pietertje Vriend on May 12, 1934 in Andijk, The Netherlands. His family moved to the United States in 1947, eventually settling in the Yakima Valley. He served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1955-1957 while stationed in Germany. On August 14, 1959, he married Joyce Broersma, of Lynden, WA. As a family, they farmed in the Yakima Valley for nearly 50 years. Their farm, Friends Flowers, was well known for its beautiful fields of gladiolus flowers.

Clarence was an active and longtime member of Faith Community Church in Zillah, WA. He served as a member of the church council, as well as a board member and bus driver at Sunnyside Christian School and a volunteer at the Sunnyside Christian School Thrift Store. He always looked to lend a hand to those in need and traveled on several mission trips with the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee.

Clarence will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Joyce; his five children: Duane (Cheryl) Friend of Zillah, WA; Timothy (Deborah) Friend of Grandville, MI; Terry (Jill) Friend of Sioux Center, IA; Sherry (Daniel) Teerman of Portage, MI; and Bonnie Mejeur of Grand Rapids, MI; his sixteen grandchildren; and his siblings: Gay (Herman) Roskamp of Outlook, WA, Jan (Lydia) Friend of Dupont, WA, Anna (Chris) Drenth of Aylmer West, Ontario, Nancy Friend of Aurora, CO, and John (Karen) Friend of Outlook, WA.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Nick and Gerard; and his daughter, Susan.

Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, December 30, at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. A graveside service, with military honors, will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, at the Zillah City Cemetery, followed at 2 p.m. by a memorial service at Faith Community Church in Zillah. In honor of Clarence in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sunnyside Christian School or Faith Community Church.
