Johannus van der Graaf (vader bruidegom) was zeer tegen dit huwelijk omdat Elisabeth uit een arm milieu kwam. Toen Johannus kwam te overlijden kregen ze de hoop het wat beter te krijgen omdat hij erg rijk was. Maar met zijn overlijden bleek dat Gerrit geen deel kreeg aan de erfenis omdat hij iemand uit een arm milieu getrouwd had.
