Jacob was ook genaamd Jacobus Adams Canter.
Volgens drs. K. Kuik "vermeld te Leeuwarden 1520-1550, burgemeester".
Een andere vermelding luidt: "Lid gezworen gemeente 1525, '26, '32-'37, schepen 1531".
Volgens en sententie van het Hof van Friesland uit 1538 was hij lakenhandelaar.
In een manuscript in het archief van het leen staat vermeld: "Benef. Boek p. 64 Leeuwarden St Vijt: 1543 Prebende die nu ter tijt heeft Jacob Adamszoon (deze Prebende is die van Christophori Leen van 15 pond. aan de Swette is door Reijnsck Canter naastleger)." Mogelijk op grond van deze vermelding heeft in het verleden iemand genoteerd dat Jacob Adams in 1543 "Prebendepriester" was. Waarschijnlijker is echter dat hij 'eigenaar' (beheerder) van de prebende was ten behoeve van zijn studerende zoon Jacob Jacobs, die later priester was "ad St. Vitum in Aula Vetori" (= in de St. Vituskerk te Oldehove).
