Notes about John William Bell

John taught school. He became interested in municipal politics and was elected to the Camden Twp. council, serving as Reeve for 7 years. He was later the Warden of Lennox & Addington Co. in 1879. He contested 5 federal elections, winning a seat in 1882, 1887, 1896, and 1900. He was defeated in 1891. A member of the Orange Lodge, he was elected President of the Orange Triennial Council in New York in 1900. An extimated 3,000 people attended his funeral in July, 1901, including former Canadian Prime Minister Sir MacKenzie Bowell, and the Hon. C. Wallace, former Minister of Customs. Over 600 registered Orangemen took part in the procession.
