In het Nieuwe Schiedamsche Courant van 4 maart 1952 vinden wij een aardig stukje van "Piet de Kuiper" het jubileum 50 jaar kuiper. Met als kop "Piet Hersbach vijftig jaar kuiper" (Sterk als een Amerikaanse Eik en zo oud.) Piet de Kuiper is niet Piet de Kuiper maar Piet Hersbach, de meesterknecht van de Fa. Duijs en Co. aan de Nieuwe Haven. Zelfs de notaris, die de hypotheek van Piet zijn eigen huisje, Puttershoeksestraat nr 5 te Schiedam, verzorgde, kendehem niet anders als Piet de Kuiper. Op 10 maart 1902 begon hij zijn baan bij deze firma, daar hij op stel en sprong de plaats van een uitgevallen kuiper moest innemen. Daarvor was hij vier jaar leerling geweest bij kuiperij van Gudde en drie jaar was hij kuiper in de kuiperij van Ris. Na een jaar sparen trad hij in het huwelijk met het meisje Windhorst. Met driehonderd gulden stak hij zich keurig in de meubeltjes, hij betaalde zijn moeder zijn kostgeld, hij gaf een goede bruiloft en had toen nog 50 gulden op zak om mee te beginnen. Zijn huisbaas vroeg 2 gulden huur en een gratis behangetje en schoonmaakkosten. Bij de Firma Duijs en Co heeft hij drie geslachten van deze zaak overleefd. Piet werd aangenomen door H.R.M.A. van Gent en W. van Gent, in 1916 gevolgd door J.H. van Gent, in 1926 kwam Th van Gent als nieuweling in de zaak en in 1936 als directeur H.P.J. Zoetmulder. Op 18 jarige leeftijd kocht hij in Rotterdam een schaafbank plus gereedschap welke hij tot het laatst toe had gebruikt. De schaafbank was toen wel 5cm afgesleten, terwijl de afschrijving van dit gereedschap op een daalder (= Fl 1,50) per jaar kwam. Werktijden bij deze firma waren 's morgens 7 uur tot half 1, dan naar huis om te eten en om half 3 weer beginnen tot 7uur, tenzij er overwerk was, dat kwam zeer vaak voor, niemand die daar aanstoot aan nam. Er warn weken van 500 vaten voor de brandewijn. Piet had in zijn jeugd veel aan krachtsport gedaan en drukte 84,5kg boven zijn macht. Zelfs op 80 jarige leeftijd hanteerde hij nog vaten van 160kg. Piet was niet alleen kuipersbaas maar ook meesterknecht.
