Diego de Montemayor murdered his wife, Juana Porcayo de la Cerda, after discovering that she had been having carnal relations with Alberto del Canto. This was the same Alberto del Canto who later married his daughter Estefania. In 1596, Diego de Montemayor led a group of 15 families from Saltillo and settled in the area of El Cerro de la Silla. This was the third attempt by Spaniards to settle the area but this time it was successful. The site became the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon
